They have captured village life as it is; rural homes are still made of mud and thatched grass.   The women still do carry wood for cooking and water from the well to their homes.  Though they have very little, there is a very strong sense of community in Uganda and raising children is every one's responsibility.  These exquisite wall hangings are each original art.  We have commissioned the artists to paint a limited quantity of each design.  Visit our website (Posters & Prints) to view other original pieces. Your purchases will help the artists to make a living and develop the artist community.  While supplies last, wall hangings are attached to a sturdy broadcloth fabric mat for hanging with a wood dowel or metal rod.   The alternative option is to frame and they are strikingly beautiful in simple black frames 

Artist C. Kagimu uses two methods for her designs, Barkcloth and Batik.

Barkcloth (the women dancing designs) is harvested annually from a tree and is prepared by steaming and beating to improve the texture and enrich the natural colour of the bark.  Once used for clothing it has now become an artist’s “canvas”.   

Batik is a wax-resistant dying technique on fabric. The bee's wax will hold to the fabric and the paraffin wax will allow cracking and the colorful dyes to bleed through. Here images are painted on top of the batik. They have a lovely feel and brilliant colors.
